And then all of a sudden my shoes and socks (right) are a hot topic on Belgium’s most popular newspaper website, Nieuwsblad.be. Thank you, Emma Gelaude! (My Fashion Blog)

Ermanno Scervino’s neon-lit Winter Wonderland of handsome gentlemen kicked off with re-editions of the 300-year-old Rob Roy Mac Gregor Tartan. It is mostly used in Canadian style lumberjack concepts, yet for Scervino the classic crimson red made room for soft grey and ice blue tones. Used in trousers, long overcoats, ties and shirts this plaid evoked a very chic, masculine, almost arctic feeling. The color pallette was further enriched by black and cobalt blue for the rest of the show where luxurious cashmere coats, leather jackets, goose down anoraks and fur lined sports coats were all casually worn over tight fitting classic trousers and more often than not completed with decadent chin high turtlenecks. Many sweaters also sported a high ship-ahoy factor while many identical capes in different materials made for a grand finale. Scervino’s classic tailoring for sumptuous evening wear along with his preppy sporty outfits will make for a complete wardrobe in any affluent customer’s monogrammed travelling trunk. Whether this client would chose the quiet peace of Lake Placid’s plaid filled ‘The Point’ or the jet setting slopes of St. Moritz and Gstaad, he will look dashing all the way. Now all we need to do, is wait for snow!

Insisting on white shirts and black ties for all but one look (perhaps it was hidden underneath the roll neck sweater), Corneliani went wild on the black watch tartan this time. Though in the refinement of the brand’s dandiest universe, Scotland’s most renowned plaid no longer evokes the roughness of the highlander’s misty heathered moors nor that of the rough manhandling that has come to be synonymous with its bloodshed history. Instead, the sharp elegant looks portrayed a refined update to the classic sartorial look. Young gentlemen strolled the historic setting’s sandy paths in crossway pattern (the tartan!), every one of them looking sharper than the next. From classically tailored suits to luxurious cashmere arran knits, plaid coats to sporty hooded jackets, it was all there with much distinguished detail. Corneliani dresses for city chic rather than the countryside, using Queen Victoria’s favourite tartan or not. Purified and polished. Stunningly simple and yes, simply stunning too.

Surprisingly Vivienne Westwood shied away from her roots and did not hold a military tattoo as we’d come to expect from her infamous signature style. Black watch tartans and other plaids were left to Scervino, Etro and Corneliani this time, who went wild on them.

As if wandering through an eclectic art gallery, the house of Westwood chose to bring a whole mix of silhouettes in the parabolic long hall of the Triennale. Thirty-three outfits between which a connection was truly hard to find. Cartoonesque models showed an amalgam of kitty cat teeshirts, candy stripes, assymetrical knits, flashy bombers and baggy jumpers which were alternated with more stylish suits that all marched a few steps forward on good old sartorial lane. Closures off centre, bashful patterns, waiter-vest short, contrasting insets, big lapels on waistcoats overlapping the jackets… it was all there. Creative at heart, truly beautiful at times, flashy yes, but rather incoherent to say the least. Westwood fans will love it though and there is really something for everyone in it, as the grand picture of the collection is very wearable indeed. A different Westwood.

120 years of iconic British design could not be more promising (ánd rewarding) than DAKS’ show for next Fall and Winter. Trench coats, army jackets, checked blazers, velvet evening wear, hunting garments, riding gear, boots, Sherlock capes and caps and all those wonderful pieces that make the English lord’s wardrobe a timeless treasure chest were re-edited for modern day living where life in airports, cold office spaces, miserably wet city streets and drafty sites are just as much to be suffered as one enjoys elegant evenings spent alongside polished mahogany bars, catching up in buttoned leather clubchairs or in suede lined limousines. DAKS brought it all to life and turned every silhouette into a gem of drop dead gorgeous masculine luxury redefined. Fur, cashmere, camel, tweed and leathers all knit, stitched, sewn, tied or patched together in a wonderfully modern blend of English high quality perfection. Tradition meets innovation. Quality salutes its demanding buyer. Sporting those Royal Warrants sets a standard and DAKS delivered what was to be expected yet again: excellence!

Dean and Dan rocked us into their penitentiary of unruly boys, all killing time behind bars in outfits many young men undoubtedly would commit a crime for! As usual, jeans formed a greater part of the collection, finished with details that blink shamelessly at an unlawful lifestyle, the most exciting being the jeans straightjacket with leather straps on the back. Color blocked coats, reds and blues, and sturdy boots proved predominent. Dark woolly hats finish off all sports coats and jackets for a more boyish look, whilst embroideries and prints of the penitentiary confinement are crying out audaciously on sweaters and cross stitch bombers. The modern man will surely discover timeless pieces to add up to any style of collection he might have built over time. Alluringly sexy as we’ve come to expect from 2 designers who portray a lifestyle as unruly as their models. Dsquared² never bores!

From the shores of Southern Italy to the plains of Australia, Etro took us on an epic journey of signature style checks and paisleys richly tailored for the classic fashionisto’s needs. Up beat Scottish pipes followed by gripping didgeridoos set the mood for elegant combinations as we’ve grown to expect from this family where creativity flows in every member’s vains. Not afraid to break with any design rule, bearded balding men were effortlessly dressed and set to walk the stage alongside cleancut younger models with many of life’s lessons yet to learn. Clearly Etro targets a wide range of men offering bolder combinations as well as toned down versions of their often flamboyant style. The family prides itself on its beautiful and bold execution of craftsmanship, as shown to the international audience as they all took a trip down the runway in suits strikingly decorated with measure tapes, needles and pins. Exciting still!
