Flower prints are one of the biggest trends this Fall Winter season. And I saw this coming. Prada started the hype with their naive Dadaistic flowers printed on every single garment. But now, this trend is in full force! From Givenchy’s floral overdose to Rodarte’s tie-dye blossoms… flowers are not only a Spring thing anymore.

Despite the arguments of animal rights activists, the Fall Winter 2013-14 catwalks were full of fur. Ermine, fox, mink and racoon were omni-présent. From the traditional fur coat to furry accessories, designers went totally crazy. And with so much fur, the animalistic elements of the collections continue with animal prints on literally everything. One rule you have to keep in mind: More is more!

There was a lot of speculation about Valentino’s Delft blue. Were they referring to Queen Maxima’s dramatic electric bleu inauguration dress (custom-made by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau)? Or were they simply in a blue mood? Yes, blue is one of the it-colors this Fall Winter season. Also the more rebellious labels like Christopher Kane and Peter Pilotto choose the color that inspired several artists throughout centuries. From Johannes Vermeer to Yves Klein.

From the Roaring Twenties, Golden Sixties… to the wrong decade that is the Nineties, fashion is always looking back, a bit melancholic. A look some designers have been toying with for a while has now taken over the runways, the Forties. The looks are feminine and elegant yet depressing, typical for the decade dominated by World War II. Fabrics are heavy and the waist has been accentuated. Done with those wrong Nineties looks, time to go classy, ladies!

You can call it a micro trend, but some Fall Winter 2013-14 catwalks were full of religious symbolism. From Madonnas and Saints printed on t-shirts and altarpiece sweaters at Dolce & Gabbana to Calvinistic soberness at Valentino. Jean Paul Gaultier started the trend with his Virgin Collection in 2007, but now a lot of designers are inspired by religion. So I started thinking… what is it about fashion and religion? Is it simply for esthetic reasons or does fashion want to say: ‘Hold on!’ during these economic hard times? Fact is that you gotta love those looks, no matter you believe or not… .
